VISEGRAD TOUR AKA ANDRICGRAD CITY TOUR
Visegrad tour will take you one of the oldest inhabited places in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“From everything that man erects and builds in his urge for living, nothing is in my eyes better and more valuable than bridges. They are more important than houses, more sacred than shrines. Belonging to everyone and being equal to everyone, useful, always built with sense, on the spot where most human needs are crossing, they are more durable than other buildings and they do not serve for anything secret or bad”. Nobel Prize Winner Ivo Andrić. ”The Bridges”
On the Visegrad tour we will visit Andricgrad, a theme park dedicated to Ivo Andric the famous writer who received a Noble prize. Situated on the banks of the Drina and Rzav rivers in the far east of Bosnia and Herzegovina Visegrad is, probably, one of the oldest inhabited places in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition, for the first time it was mentioned at the end of the XIV century as a village on a hill. This town was a fortress that controlled the caravan route between Dubrovnik and Serbia and the way to Constantinople.
Mehmed-pasa Sokolivica bridge
Višegrad is especially known for Mehmed-paša Sokolivića bridge across the Drina River which was built in 1571. Today this bridge is rightfully on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It used to link Bosnia with Constantinople while today is a place visited by numerous tourists, travelers, artists and devotees of history and architecture. It is also one of the most significant national monuments in Višegrad, Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
If you choose Visegrad tour during the summer months, while the days are still long, we recommend that you take a short boat ride on the river Drina. The Drina is everything that tourists want: connecting, intertwining and enjoying in its natural beauty. This river has inspired artists for many centuries. Also, they have painted it and sung about it countless times. The Drina is a real picture of human existence in this region. There is always something going on around the river, whether people are relaxing, working, rafting or fishing. It is one of the most popular fishing destinations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, rich in some thirty species of fish.
Višegrad with its large number of cultural and historical monuments and wealth of natural resources has always been an interesting place for tourists. Overall, the people of Višegrad are well known for their love of song, celebration and enjoyment. Just like Ivo Andrić, many people have found inspiration to write and sing while gazing into the clear green water of the River Drina and the bridge that spans it. After all, maybe you will too.
